What Makes A Sports Collectible Valuable?

Asking a really die hard sports fan what makes their sports collectible so valuable may result in a barrage of answers. Perhaps the item came from the team or player that is their favorite, or perhaps they are alumni and just root for the home team. However, if you ask someone who is a serious collector of authentic autographed memorabilia that same question, they may say that it must have come from a player who has made history or played in a game that made history for some reason, or has been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Sometimes people choose to collect memorabilia as a way of remembering great sports figures from the past. It may be in the form of an autographed football from Vince Lombardi or perhaps baseball autographs from legends such as Babe Ruth or Hank Aaron. Some feel that even though these people are no longer with us, collecting their memorabilia is a great way of honoring them and what they offered to their particular sport. For them, collecting is just one way of paying tribute to the player or team that they deem important.

When a respected and popular athlete dies it will often result in an increase in the demand for their signed sports memorabilia. The reasoning is that since this great athlete will no longer be available to sign autographs it will limit the number available, thus causing a sports collectible related to that individual to increase in value, as more and more fans clamor to get items from the player.

Of course, a good solid reputation and career longevity will also drive up the value of authentic autographs from a particular player or team. When an athlete retires with a great record, more and more people want to collect items pertaining to that player. The demand for authentic autographed memorabilia for a player or team will also likely increase after some kind of major event, such as playing in the super bowl or world series, or breaking a previous record.

Once you have started your collection of autographed sports collectibles and realize that their value increases over the years, you need to decide how to store or display them in order to keep them in their current, pristine condition. In order for the value to go even higher, a sports collectible must remain in top shape, which is one reason why so many collectors decide to keep their items in some type of a display case. A top-of-the-line display case will help to keep dirt and dust from settling on your prized possessions over the years, thereby increasing their value.
