If you love buying unique hand-crafted items directly from the talented artisan who made them, you will want to visit SoWa Open Air Market (540 Harrison Avenue) in Boston's hip South End neighborhood. Open only on Sundays from mid-May through late-October, plus Saturdays on opening and closing weekends, the market is one of the city's most popular specialty shopping destinations. An exciting new addition for 2009 is the SoWa Antiques Market, located in an adjacent historic building.
But one thing remains certain, they are constantly being sought after by people who understand and value these items. People who look at it as a very important part of the story a certain family has to tell and the lifestyle they are projecting. Most of these items are locked away in a cold and dark corner waiting for the day they can once again be part of a family's heritage.
The good thing about having a lot of these rare collectibles is that they tend to get more and more expensive as the years pass, because they aren’t just good to look at. They are part of history and the part of the culture. And the good thing about it is if these items are kept in mint condition, they can benefit the people taking care of them with monetary rewards. One good place to know just how much value there is in taking care of things of the old, are events like an auction.
So what treasures will you find? Look for gorgeous one-of-a-kind handcrafted jewelry, stylish pocketbooks, lustrous hand-crafted furniture, plus many stunning sets of dishes and other pottery and ceramic pieces. One of my favorites is a local designer of greeting cards who uses a real hand-operated letterpress to print the beautiful designs. Another favorite is a tiny Boston company that silkscreens designs of local graphic artists by hand onto silky cotton t-shirts - I think of them as wearable art.
One of the best parts of this market is being able to talk directly to the artisan who made the product that you're buying. If you want something slightly different, or perhaps additional pieces for gifts, you can usually make arrangements.
Many investors start out buying a few collectibles just for the intention of selling at a profit-- without planning on developing an interest in the collectibles markets. With many, this soon changes as they develop a love for buying and selling collectibles and end up making a business and career with collectibles.
I have been involved in the collectibles business for 25 years, and I feel your investment dollar could not be safer at this time. There are no guarantees in life but I know this -- I'll take a signed document by George Washington or Abraham Lincoln over an equal dollar amount of blue chip stocks every time!.
As investors, we all have taken some very hard hits over the past year. But it does not have to continue. You can stop the bleeding today in your investment situation. Place your money in tangible collectible investments and go back to sleeping at night.
